Datsun 1000 Coupe

A mate of mine has recently aquired a Datsun 1000 coupe. It's rust free and every panel straight as an arrow.  He's interested in finding out what engines he can slot in there without any major mods.  So what engines can he use as a bolt on (or close to) alternative.  Will an L16 or L18 fit in there?
