I installed a stock imported 1200 GX (twin hitachi) engine in a 1000 Coupe many
years back without a brake upgrade and it was a real screamer that surprised a
lot of ppl. There was something about the gearbox that created bother with that
conversion but it wasn't impossible to sort out - no lists for advice in those
days. If you go to 1400 cc you would need a brake upgrade if the +25% rule is
still in place these days (998 cc to max. 1250 cc). These are so light (2 ppl
can lift it up, and carry it into a tight parking spot as we did it for a laugh
in town one night) and with 100 hp they are a real handful in the wet. The twin
carb A12/A14 engines don't seem to be around much these days for some reason
(prolly sob engines by our standards) and I don't like your chances of getting a
L series in there. The 4AG Toy family of engines might fit as they are tiny for
a 1600 cc EFI and with 88 kw for 16 valves or 100-123 kw in 20 valve head form,
with the power they produce I can see why the U25 ppl like them in just about
anything. I don't advocate non Nissan engines in dattos as such but sometimes
they're worth a look.

Terry
