Just to add a bit to what Andrew sai, alot of light commercial vehicles have
these, there called load sensors, or proportioning valves. In some cases,
like on a hilux, they are manually adjusted, they are bolted to the chassis
over the rear axle and have a long arm that is connected on the diff
housing. It works by measuring the height difference from the diff to the
chassis to componsate for a load that is in the rear. Some other types may
have a form of manual adjust override?

If you wanna play with one I have a few laying around from late model
hilux's, I'm in melbourne.
