Andrew,
R31 has mechanically (handbrake) operated linkage on caliper.

For rallying you need a lot of rear bias to get the car to turn in without
locking the fronts and sliding off into the scenery. This is why I want to
fit front calipers to the rear.

For a road car I think that the R31 rear brake setup is pretty good, It
would have to be lighter than drums, and it looks pretty schmick as well
(better than drums for sure).
