Paul,
Pull the spark plugs and have a a look at them. I had a very similar sounding engine
last night and it turned out to be a stuffed plug in cylinder 4. The plug was covered
in petrol and almost black. It would start and idle but under load would die. New
spark plug and hey presto - full power.
