Paul,

The S2 Bluey cap is not a problem as it fits this dizzy which is basically
the same item but with different guts in the S2 Bluey. If you have a pit and
a hill on your either side of your points the chances are that your
condenser is either stuffed or not the correct part. A condenser rating does
vary although most of them are .18 to .22 mf. Another couple of things that
kill points is the wrong coil fitted i.e. not a resistor type, and the other
thing is the ballast resister is either the wrong one for a Datto or not
wired in correctly or I've even seen them removed altogether with the
resister type coil still there.

It's better to do this simple battery ign system test with a helper and
you'll need a multimeter.

At ignition ON you should have 12v-13v at one side of the BR, ~8-9v at the
other side and 8v-9v at the +ve coil terminal. Remove the solenoid start
wire (insulate it so it doesn't touch any metal parts) and then turn the ign
key to the START position. You should have the same voltages at the BR, but
the coil should now show 12v-13v. If this all checks out, I'd replace the
points and the condenser, set the dwell and timing and test drive it. Check
the point condition after 500k or so.

regards
Terry

Subject: The 'Datsun Miss'

Well she's still got the 'Datsun Miss' and I cant seem to find out what's
causing it. It runs well enough but 1-3 times a second it will miss.
Aparently it was running sweet when it was on the 1981 200B auto, and it has
been transplanted into my 1977 200B manual, I guess anything could have
happened between.

Today I tinkered with the points. One side has a 'pit' the other has a
'hill' that fits in the pit. Would that cause it? I tried to file it down
but it was too hard and almost blluntened my file.

Would an incorrect dwell angle cause this? Would incorrect ignition timing
cause this? I'm wondering because I've got no timing light at present...does
anyone know how to build one on the cheap?

It has a coil off a Sigma (with resistor) and the distributor cap is off a
bluebird s2 (with electronic ignition I think) and I've tried various rotor
buttons, plugs and leads from various Datsuns and all do the same thing.

Here's an MP3 sample I took of my engine if you want to listen to it:
http://members.dingoblue.net.au/~pop79/datmiss.mp3
(187Kb) you can hear the broken exhaust rattle everytime it misses.
