Paul it sounds like your condencer is stuffed hea.
I had the same symptons a while ago unfortunately at the same time I had a water leak
at night which I thought the head had stuffed itself.
I was way way down south and I had to have the car towed back to Perth.
Next day I found the leak and it was a little hose just above the distributer and it
scwerted boiling water onto the condenser and cooked it.
Anyhow fit a new condencer and things should be fine.
