Remember that in most states the battery has to be a full sealed type or
have a vent to atmosphere in order to be legal, otherwise hydrogen gas can
build up in the boot which is not terribly friendly.
Some auto electrical shops have a fitting which fastens into a hole in the
firewall and has a bolt through the middle that you can use to pass the
cable through with absolutely no chance of it ever shorting on the sharp
surface. I believe they're used in hot rods and race cars sometimes, and
they are about $20.
