Steve,
      You've probably noticed that a "points" setup uses a ballast resistor
when the engine is running and bypasses it when cranking.(fatter spark) The
resistance of the "points" type is lower than an "electronic" type. If a
"points" coil is being used with an electronic coil ignitor, it will damage
the main transistor in the ignitor module. This is why you should get your
hands on the original or similar type of coil.
