David,

It's a=20 question of economics and practicalities.

I'll=20 explain what I mean - if money is no object then there is a LSD = solution=20 for a 1600, get an open R180 with the ratio you want and take it to your = local=20 go fast driveline place and order a Quaife centre http://www.vw6speed.com/parts.= htm and=20 part with mega $$$$, I forget what these are worth but as the $AU is = crap=20 against the greenback they aint cheap. Or if you've got $1200 - ~$1800 = to spend=20 you can get a second hand (whatever out of) R180LS and it seems like = there are=20 still plenty of these about or if you're looking for a $400 - $600 R180 = or R200=20 LSD solution then at that price the bolt straight in variety=20 are usually "pretty hard to find" like even I'd say they're = rare or=20 you have to gas axe the rear end or wheel well out of your 1600 to fit = it as in=20 the case with most R200LS diffs.

The US=20 guys just fit Soobie R160LS diffs behind engines like VG30's etc and = they don't=20 seem to have a problem with them (so they tell us anyway) but in Aus we = don't=20 even have a good supply of these and also we Aussies have a problem = (usually=20 from many bad experiences) with R160 diffs even behind a stock L18. I = used a=20 R160LS out of a Soobie Brumby (cost a bomb too in '80) on a dirt = 1600 with=20 a L engine that put out 170hp on a good day and it destroyed itself = for the=20 first time on the 3rd or so time out and after I got it rebuilt with = good exy=20 bits it actually did last a while. As I see it the Soobie R160LS = isn't=20 going to do the business behind a 300hp FJ for very long at all, what is = hard to=20 break though is a properly CIG welded R160 or R180 but these are not = everyone's=20 idea of practical on a daily driver.

regards

Terry=20 (tough one this, easier to fit good brakes)

I Don't know the answer to the question, but are the LSD Diffs = really hard=20 to find, I have never asked or=20

bothered about it, but i would like one for the new 1600. If they = are hard=20 to get how much do they cost?=20
