What do you mean by squeak, squeak". Also would must Places know how to weld the diff up?

i guess it's only a diff, and if it don't work or is to nasty to drive there pretty easy to change.

Hi Dave,

I was very very weary before = having my diff=20 welded (daily street driver).  I am happy to report that apart from = the=20 mandatory 'squeak, squeak' of the tyres at parking speeds, that it is a = ball=20 tearer.

Very highly recommended, if you can put = up with a=20 little harshness at those parking speeds.

I was expecting the car to 'push' = understeer and do=20 all sorts of nasty things, but as it turns out, my style of driving = seems to go=20 well with it....i.e. brake before a corner, turn in a power = on.

Two things to consider....a) make sure = when it is=20 welded it is done right, the first one I did myself with a MIG and it = lasted=20 about a week before busting 'open'

b) my car runs 5deg positive caster and = 1.5deg=20 negative camber, apparently this helps the car turn with the locked=20 diff.

Cheers,

Cam

It's a=3D20 = question of=20 economics and practicalities.

I'll=3D20 = explain what I mean -=20 if money is no object then there is a LSD =3D solution=3D20 for a = 1600, get=20 an open R180 with the ratio you want and take it to your =3D = local=3D20 go fast=20 driveline place and order a Quaife centre http://www.vw6speed.com/parts.=3D htm and=3D20 = part with mega=20 $$$$, I forget what these are worth but as the $AU is =3D crap=3D20 = against the=20 greenback they aint cheap. Or if you've got $1200 - ~$1800 =3D to = spend=3D20 you=20 can get a second hand (whatever out of) R180LS and it seems like =3D = there=20 are=3D20 still plenty of these about or if you're looking for a $400 - = $600 R180=20 =3D or R200=3D20 LSD solution then at that price the bolt straight in = variety=3D20=20 are usually "pretty hard to find" like even I'd say they're = =3D rare=20 or=3D20 you have to gas axe the rear end or wheel well out of your = 1600 to fit =3D=20 it as in=3D20 the case with most R200LS diffs. =

=

The US=3D20 = guys just fit Soobie=20 R160LS diffs behind engines like VG30's etc and =3D they don't=3D20 = seem to have a=20 problem with them (so they tell us anyway) but in Aus we =3D = don't=3D20 even have=20 a good supply of these and also we Aussies have a problem =3D = (usually=3D20 from=20 many bad experiences) with R160 diffs even behind a stock L18. I =3D = used a=3D20=20 R160LS out of a Soobie Brumby (cost a bomb too in '80) on a dirt = =3D 1600=20 with=3D20 a L engine that put out 170hp on a good day and it = destroyed=20 itself =3D for the=3D20 first time on the 3rd or so time out and after = I got it=20 rebuilt with =3D good exy=3D20 bits it actually did last a = while. As I see it=20 the Soobie R160LS =3D isn't=3D20 going to do the business behind a = 300hp FJ for=20 very long at all, what is =3D hard to=3D20 break though is a properly = CIG welded=20 R160 or R180 but these are not =3D everyone's=3D20 idea of practical = on a daily=20 driver.

regards =20

Terry=3D20 = (tough one this,=20 easier to fit good brakes)

I Don't know the answer to the question, but are the LSD Diffs = =3D really=20 hard=3D20 to find, I have never asked or=3D20=20

bothered about it, but i would like one for the new 1600. If they = =3D are=20 hard=3D20 to get how much do they cost?=3D20=20
