Leighton,

Thanks for confirming that I was looking at the correct end of the booster
and it's also seems that I had the offending part worked out from your
earlier description. I'm still thinking there's got to be more to it. Like
why does the grommet fall out with a 7/8" cylinder and not others. Like
Malcolm said, i've got to have a closer look at this problem in daylight.
May be there's something that holds the rod in place better in the other
cylinders. I've got a 7/8" and a 3/4" lying about so I'll have a look
tomorrow.

regards
Terry.

ok looking in from the front of the car if you pull the master cylinder off
and pull out that metal pin that is recessed by a rubber seal into the
booster ( the little rod that pushes into the master cylinder) pull that out
and have a look in or stick your finger straight in -

what you should feel is a rubber backingat the rear of the booster - this
is about the size of a 20 cent piece( alittle smaller and it can fall
forward and just lie in the bottom of the booster.. if you can get it out
and press back in to the back of the booster you have solved the problem( at
least it solved mine and solved it bloody well)

i think what is happening with the pedal swing is the little rubber thingy
is falling out and then you just have metal ( the end of the plunger coming
from the pedal) suddenly slamming up against metal again. im not sure
exactly but this is eliminated simply by pressing that rubber disc back in
position
