Andrew,

I don't think they are different other than brand. The black ones are
genuine, the brown ones could be an Ingram or similar replacement and
there's nothing wrong with Ingram regs. Check one of the brown ones out more
closely next time you're out at the wreckers.

I thought they each may have been used for a certain range of current
ratings, but I have a 60A alt from the pintara(?) CA20 powered, and I
have seen both the brown and black regs in these...
