Daniel,
I'm
pretty sure that you have a 23000-Rxxxx series alternator. There are some
variations of the terminal markings on these alternators so I'll use generic
terms for these.
This
alternator actually is pretty close to the Dime article, except the article
gets a bit fancy as they retain the external reg supposedly so you can go back
to an external reg - why would you want to.
Alternator wiring with stock 1600 loom.
Bat
+ > thick White/red
stripe and suppressor pigtail if fitted
Bat
- > Black and suppressor body if fitted
F(ield) | > White/black
N(eutral) -- > Yellow
Disconnect the external reg plug, you can make up some jumper
wires for neatness.
Connect the Field (White/black) to White/red (dash
light)
Connect the Neutral (Yellow) to Active (White)
Now
for the tricky bit, some of these alternators have a quirk with the reg that
causes the Alt light to glow when the battery is fully charged. It's a
mystery as to why Hitachi did it but the fix was discovered by an Ozdat lister
with an FJ and I've used it a few times and it works. What you need is an
IN4004 or IN4007 diode installed in the Field line. A diode is directional so
you have to turn the ignition on and check which way the light comes on (as it
should) then start the engine to make sure it goes out. I fit the diode up
near the reg plug.
hope
it works for you,
regards
Terry
It's a hitachi unit that Errol sent me with the
z18et. Basically it has the sense and lamp connection on the back of
it with the connectors right angles to each other and two bolt style clamps
for the +ve and -ve (I think).

Daniel,
What year 1600 and what brand of alternator are you trying to wire
up. If it's a Hitachi then what's it off or what's the part number. The
Dime qtly article is to wire an early model Hitachi (non-EFI) say from a
280Z. It was written a few years back and it's not correct for all
conversions.

Terry
Hey guys, I'm just wring up my alternator
but I am having a few problems. My current wiring loom is setup
for the external regualted alternator and my new one is an internal reg
unit. I read the article on dime quarterly and I have no
trouble actually removing the regulator and rejoining wires there, but
here's the prob: The old alternator has a four plug connection to
the alternator whereas the new one has a sense and lamp wire in a "T"
connector config. So how do I change the four plug connector to
suit the 2 plug "T" connector?
Cheers
