I would still go for a lean running rear carb if the carbs are the only
change.  Check if the throttle butterflies are balanced at idle by putting a
piece of hose down the throat of each carb. Put your ear to the top of the
hose. If the hiss is different for each carb, you need to adjust the
butterflies until the hiss is the same in each throat.  Then retighten the
linkages, ensuring both butterflies open exactly together as you hit the
accelerator.  If one throttle lags the other, you get the type of problems
your describing.
