Andrew You may be right. Its possible the Aussi built cars were assembled from imported panels in the first year of assembly until the update model started in 1970. I understand the difference is in the panel coatings. Those used in Japan were far better at that time than the Aussi supplied sheet metal that the later cars were stamped from. If you see a bent panel from a Jap model, the bare panel looks like it is lightly gal coated, the Aussi panel looks like bare metal. The panel joint sealant also seem less prone to fracturing and letting water seep in to cause rust in the join. This is particularly noticeable around the plenum chamber in the engine bay.
