yeah thanx for that Terry.

I am not sure what the last measurement is but it seems pretty important when fitting bigger calipers.. I read the article and it was fairly informative. Thankyou.

the offset is the difference of the backspace and total rim width? with the centre of the rim being 0 offset???

So if i have an offset which pushes the mounting point of the hub/wheel further out from the car it means the wheel may touch the strut etc, however if i go the other way the wheel may touch the guards?

The problem i have now is finding a wheel with a centre mounting point which is raised above the front of the wheel. So i can mount a caliper which will not touch on the front of the rim's face. Know of any off the top of your head Terry?

cheers again

i'm not sure i do.

so which is the distance from the centre part of the rim ie where the holes are for the hub to bolt to? to the back of the rim? ie the part closest to the strut?
[Terry Rudd] This measurement is called the "backspace"

and what is the distance from the front of the rim? ie the part that points out from the car to the back of the wheel? ie part closest to the strut?
[Terry Rudd] I think you are asking about overall width. With a double safety rim (as most modern wheels are) this distance is 1" wider than the rim width spec. The rim width is measured from inside bead to inside bead - so you can only measure this distance easily without a tyre fitted. If a rim has say 14x6JJ stamped on it, this is the distance that the stamp refers to and JJ mean double safety, J means single safety bead and they are just about extinct except on 50's vehicles with original rims fitted.

and finally what is the distance from the centre of the rim ie where the hub bolts to, to the front of the rim? the part pointing out from the car?
[Terry Rudd] This distance doesn't have a particular name that I'm aware of.

i am sorry this isn' the best description terry and other but i cant think of a better way other than drawing a pic.
[Terry Rudd] Did you have a look at Kurt's wheel article.

cheers if you can help
