Terry, The L24 carrier is about 2" in overall length, however the one out of one of my 1600 boxes (std 4-spd) is 1.5" as you say. Oh and I did confirm that the forks were pushing on the friction plate the wrong way, theres marks on the inside of them and a nice big blue burn mark on the friction plate.. bugger it.. it was brand new too.. oh well.
When I said I had some trouble getting the engine together I meant that it didn't just slip together.. it came together straight and enough (until the longer carrier met the forks obviously) to get the bolts started and then i just did them up and pulled it together. The box did bolt all the way up to the block.. wouldn't've even tried to crank it over if it hadn't've. Oh and the L28(?) clutch looks to be about half an inch thicker than the L24 though I haven't measured them yet. I'm getting faster at pulling an engine out though.. took me (by myself) exactly 1 hour. Unfortunately I'll have to wait til next week to go buy a new clutch as the forks on the L28 one have been rooted by being overflexed i fear. Atleast it doesn't look exactly right and i don't want to be pulling it apart again as you say. Oh and the L24 pressure plate assembly doesn't bolt up to the L28 flywheel.. oh well.. Anyway I really appreciate your help and did I mention that the "clutch experts" had no idea what was wrong with it? And this is after explaining it three times on the phone to him. Yet I got a response in both this and sr20transplants list within half an hour of posting it which both turned out to be correct.
