I am pretty sure that it would be a very rare occurance if it happened at
all. But if you get uncle barry to rebuild your turbo on the kitchen table
after he's had a few, who knows.

This novel was just saying how the car company in question (US company of
course) balances the cost of settling out of court versus the cost of a
model recall.
Faults talked about were:
Axles and transmissions seizing suddenly at speed, toxic leather seats,
exploding turbos etc..

It all seemed very plausable if you have ever heard of the AMC Gremlin! haha
