Cheers Craig, a 4.4 would be a good compromise for
a streetable 1600 with a 5 -speed I guess.
A couple of weeks ago I missed out on a LSD
clutch-pack R180 4.1 with lightened and balanced 1600 half shafts
attached for $1000. By the yime I decided to buy
it, it was gone. Aaarrrgh.
I wonder if it would have been possible to use a
720 donor (open) diff to change the 4.1 LSD to a 4.4?
i.e. Can you swap the crown and pinion between open
and LSD R180s to get the desired ratio LSD?

Hey Rob, a R180 will do for most applications, a
R200 LSD would be nessisary for serious turbo track work only, a R180 on loose
surfaces can handle heaps, I've seen a 331 Chev worked to the max with
Hoosiers and manual g/box on grippy clay go for 4 years with only oil change,
welded though. I have friends with very quick curcuit cars n/a L motors and
sr's useing r180's with no prob's. 720's come out with 4.4 and 4.6's, AFAIK,
straight swap into a non cv head.

Craig

Anyway isnt a R200 a bit of overkill? do you
plan on putting more than 450HP through it?
I thought even a R180 could handle up to 400HP
easy! I just bought an open R180 5.1 ratio diff for my 1600,
yet to be installed. I figure it might be good
for motorkhanas even though I'll forfeit top speed a bit.
BTW, I keep hearing rumours that a 720 4WD ute
(front?) diff is LSD. Anyone know if this is true?
Is it R180? What ratio? So many
questions.
my 2 cents worth

Ben,
Dont bother with the S13 R200 as they are crap by
comparison with clutch pack centres and are a lot harder to
fit.
im gunan be putting c210 IRS in the bluey
later on.....how difficult would it be fitting a s13/r32/33 R200 into the
setup???

The later S13 style viscous LSD uses a left
side axle with 2 sets of slpines on it. One spline connect to the side
gear and the second set of splines to the viscous clutch pack. The
Viscous clutch pack is only approximately 12 mm thick and wea out very
quickly with any decent torque put through them. Also the make them work
you must use the axles that came with the centre. Also there are two
spline distances on the left axle depending on model. All to much
trouble.
I also looked at changing the later viscous
diffs to early clutch pack, but this is also a pain due to crown
wheel offset distances being different.
