The strut AND the strut top are shorter, but it's not 30-40mm for the top alone (not sure precisely how much)

240k tops have slightly different bolt spacing though so you will have to file out holes in your strut towers a little bit.

Hi Pete,

is it true that 240k strut tops have a 1/2 inch lowering advantage over 200b/1600 tops???

AFAIK, It's the strut itself that is shorter, not the strut top.

I need to lower my front end by about 30-40mm however I don't need spring compressors to remove my spring now. What will happen if I cut them down even further?

They might fall out when you go over a bump and get airborne, or when
you jack up the car. Then when the car comes down, if the spring isnt on
the seat properly, things can get a bit messy :) And it's illegal to
have non-captive springs.

Cheers,

Chris
