I'm hardly the most qualified to answer this question, but considering no one else has yet, I'll help with what I can.

1. Can I put a L18 head onto a L20 bottom end, and will the standard bottom end cope with the compression rise ok??
I would say not, you need a strong bottom end to do that.

3. will fit the bluebird ignition as I hear it is much better, are there any possible problems with this??
Not that I know of...

4. the motor will be going into a 180B SSS, will it still fit without modifying the bonnet as I am told the L20 block is taller??
I think it would, I've seen a L20B motor in a 120Y and it didn't need bonnet mods, plus the height difference should be minimal.

5. will the standard 3spd auto (not my choice, my gf on ly has an auto license) cope with this power increase??
It should handle it ok I think, a stall converter might be an idea to reduce power loss though. I wouldn't try it with serious power though.

6. Lastly, thinking of twin dellortos or similar, just to have twins on it, is this a bad choice??
If you want twins, I recomend you get some SUs, they alone give you more tourqe and more economical than others.
can anyone think of any probs, or things I might miss??
Get a set of extractors and a sports exhaust, I recomend 2.25in, that is the cheapest hp increase you will ever get, plus it gives better fuel economy, actually there's nothing bad to be said about aftermarket extractors.

I sure others will have somthing to add,

Hoped that helped some,

James Cox
