Alternator regulators

List,

If I fit an internally regulated alternator into a car that was previously regulated, and botch it, can I damage the alternator?

I think I've damaged either one (or both) of the regulators- how do I test for this and how can I fix it (bypass the damaged internal regulator and use an external regulator for example?)
