I had a panel beater come round today to check out the body on my car for painting and he said baken enamel could be painted over the top of a good acrylic base.

 

He said mine was fine as long as it was rubbed back well and had putty placed over before the painting.

 

He said silver was not a good colour due to the quantity of thinners, he recommender a solid colour such as green or blue.

Most factory finishes are baked enamel (as in heated after spraying).    As far as I know all finishes can be used over it.     Spraying enamel is slower drying & curing and can be used over acrylic.     Acrylic is quick drying and reacts with spray enamel finishes.       As far as I know it has a lot to do with the thinners; but stand to be corrected.     I may learn something myself here.

datto 1600's were mainly enamel paint yes?

 

whats the deal with painting acrylic on enamel and vice versa?

 

is it true that acrylic won't go on top of enamel? if so, what preparation needs to be done to paint acrylic on top? not including sandblasting.
