If the carbs came from an engine where they were working correctly,
Check for air leaks on the manifold and also needle and seat are not
blocked/restricted with rubber from fitting hose to barbs etc.
If you continue to run the engine with either excessively rich or lean
mixtures your rings will be toast very rapidly.

Subject: URGENT: Over-heating probs

Hey listers.... I finally got the L20 started in my 1600 (yeeeha) but a
problem arrose that the motor got very hot very quickly, like within 5 mins
or so, the extractors were glowing red. Now, i have twin 40mm delortoes,
series 2 bluey dizzy, i set the timing on about 8-9deg. i have the standard
radiator running single 10" thermo, no fan on front of motor, pretty new
thermostat, There was a lot of fumes in the garage. Am i right to think
that the carbies are WAY out of tune and its running extremely rich, or is
it something else, i think we stopped the motor when the guage reached 197
F. (autometer water temp guage)
Anyone out there have any ideas, as i need to sort this prob out, cause i
really dont feel like cooking a brand new motor... thanks guys.. :)
