Chris, Only ever seen this happen with a number of complimentary circumstances, mostly it's rooted tapered style ball joints and that's what I fix first - worked for me every time. Not saying it can't happen but I've never seen the problem on 71/72 models with the later style ball joints. Also, I still leave the dust covers in place on the earlier 1600's with 200B discs just as a precaution as they do protect the rotor. With bad ball joints the noise under brakes is pretty bad and this problem is very obvious but not destructive.
