Mark gave some good advise mate, if it is a few threads above the head, put
a thin flat washer on it to heat sink above the head, then slide an oversize
nut on it and mig it on.  I forgot about using a nut, luckily Mark tossed it
up.

BTW never re-use a head gasket (unless it is a copper re-usable one, you
will make more work for yourself and run the risk of damaging components.
Exhaust all possibilities for removing head stud first, even try heating
with the oxy and turning with vice grips, just watch the head doesn't become
a banana.

Brad, thanks. It snapped a few threads from the top of the threaded 
section so I think I will have to take the head off again. I'll do a 
mark k trick and reuse the head gasket. it's only done 5 minutes of work.
