its a good trick too, i re used the head gasket  (s) on me magna i just
reringed and a 253 v8 some time ago, its good to  spray some hylomar or
silver paint on the head gasket if you can when u reasemble...thats if u got
it but not necessary.
 at least with a  good used headgasket its already pre stressed and u dont
have to retighten.

actually  outa the  40 or so engines i`ve rebuilt , i have only retorqued on
e head.
