I'm still sticking to my guns here, I reckon it's a hydraulic problem. But just to throw in a comment, I had a mini that wouldn't go into 1st until you put it in 2nd. So you'd go Neutral, then 2nd then 1st and then you could take off.

I spose another obvious question is "are you losing fluid from the master cylinder reservoir?" If it just wont select, then try selecting 1st gear from neutral and then try to select reverse - if you have a slightly bent or worn selector pin then using this method to select reverse gear will sometimes work well.
