You've just written along the lines of what I was going to write if the
reverse gear was clashing on attempting to select from neutral - but the
gears are not clashing from what we've been told. It's an interesting one to
diagnose without driving the vehicle.

Because you can select first and reverse, I dont think the selectors are
your problem. You just made it clear that its your clutch.

By selecting second gear first, you stop the input shaft from spinning (ie
free the clutch) by using the 2nd gear synchro to overcome the "sticking'
(dragging) clutch plate - then it falls into first gear.  If you try to put
it straight into first gear, the first gear synchro isnt stong enough to
stop the input shaft from spinning (ie stop the clutch plate, which is
dragging or not fully released between the pressure plate and the flywheel).
1st gear has little leverage when being "driven" in the opposite direction
to normal (effectively from the rear of the box to the front).  From this
(rear to front drive) direction, as you go up the gear ratios you get more
leverage on the clutch plate/input shaft from the gear box.  Same principle
as to why you roll start in a higher gear than 1st, you can exert more
torque on the clutch plate/input shaft from the "driven" end.

Bottom line.  You've convinced me either your clutch plate is stuffed, the
hydraulics operating it are stuffed, or the pressure plate diaphram is
stuffed - perhaps its pivot spring has broken. These symptoms are what you
get when the pressure plate doesnt work properly.
