WTF???
I didn't say anything about brakes.......
you said your son had never heard of anything under 3.5 ltr that goes aswell as a 30 yr old datsun. I said has he heard of wrx, silvia etc etc because I have a strange suspicion, call me crazy, that they might in some small, insignificant way be more fun than a datto.....then again they might not......still a bold statement.
and i don't know what all this other diy, aussie battler stuff has to do with anything.........
cheers
James

Big brakes might come standard but they're NOT 30+ years old and some of them aren't even Dattos - and what fun can it be to get the big brakes standard anyway??
Most of the guys on this list are into the challenge of making a perfect car even better!!  I don't know about you but I really enjoy the challenge, and the satisfaction of knowing I did it myself. Anyone can spend the dollars and buy the performance you speak of but very few can DIY.
Well done Richard (I never received your original post)!!!
For those who haven't experienced it - there is NOTHING quite like the sweet sound of a Weber powered L series on full noise!!
They're not exactly fuel misers though! HaHa
Cheers
Mick
PS  On 'my' favourite road I have never had anything (including "WRX, Silvia, EVO, GTiR") keep up with, or outbrake my Datto. I eagerly await challenges

Finally completed the transition of my daughter-in-law's "Granny" 1600 auto into a "real" Datto yesterday.

Got the L18 installed with the bigger breathing head, the five speed box, improved rubber.  Luke (son) and I drove soberly around the Macedon area tuning the carbs, got them on song almost imediately - then spent an hour (and a tank of fuel) howling through the nearby forest using 7 grand in every indirect gear.

Luke had to admit nothing built these days with less than 3.5 litres goes like a good old school Datto - he's impressed!  (bigger brakes are a definite next item)
