Well, you had me until the end. I take it that you have never suffered from severe clinical depression. Suicide is not usually a well thought out course for a person who has calmly and objectively considered his or her options.
There is unhappiness, shame, anger, frustration, grief, sadness, loneliness, and a whole spectrum of non happiness that should be recognized as natural states of being, I agree. There is no reason to suppose that humans are "supposed" to be happy, but again, clinical depression is an illness. The world is not seen realistically through the lens of depression, and I'm glad that I had enough mind left in my depressive psychosis to seek intervention, or else I might not be here today. But, again, I agree with you that happiness is over rated. I am sometimes at my most creative when I have a good dose of angst. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Jason (Memphis) Sent: Friday, January 23, 2009 2:03 PM To: Memphis Freethought Alliance Subject: Re: Is this country suffering from a Negativity Meme? What is wrong with suicide? If a person wants to take his or her own life, that is his or her perogative. That is one less loser (not necessarily though) you have to worry about. People can be optimistic. That is their freedom. However, don't get upset or think something is wrong with people who are pessimistic. Again, my original point: if you are pessimistic in this American society, people think that you should change or that something is wrong with you. If you are depressed, people around you think that you are not content with your disabiling misery. There is so much pressure to be happy. If I want to sleep all day and comtemplate suicide while I am awake, what gives you the right to stop me or to claim that is wrong?
