Ponds are old, vertical is the new hotness. I have yet to see anyone do
it commercially yet on any kind of scale and the vertical process seems
to be pretty closely guarded.

Jatropha on the other hand is indigenous to S American and could easily
make poor countries richer using non arable soil (which they tend to
have plenty of). Processing and producing the oil is already happening.
