could be my 80+ year old wiring, though most of it is actually less than 11 years old. No real idea why I get crap CFL life. Still not cost effective to use the stupid things. I like the heat coming off a bulb in the winter. Reduces heating costs.

My house is not all that old - built in 1981. I get no long life from the CFL bulbs either. I think they are intended to be installed upright only in table lamps but we are being told to put them all over the house.I don't like the light they give off either. As I get older, I find I need more light, not less and they seem to give off less light than a comparable incandscent lamp.

The other thing that I object to is that they do not appear to be intended to fit inside most existing light fixtures. That is no saving if they expect me to replace all of my fixtures. In addition, the stores do not appear to have many new fixtures that are intended to house the CFL bulbs.

I have hopes for the LED lamps but they don't appear to be quite ready yet either.
