Dan, The fabric is glued to a foam/fiber substrate piece, and almost all of that glue has let go. The fabric is really only held up around the edges now. I'm tempted to get some plastic fasteners of some kind to rivet/staple the thing back into place.
I'm sure from an assembly standpoint, the single piece headliner is much faster to install that a fabric/bow stretched type of headliner (and time is money), but these don't age nearly as well. I'm skeptical that the old glue can be cleaned off without damaging either the fabric or the substrate, and I'm even more skeptical that I could neatly align and re-glue the fabric, and get it to stick into all the valleys on the contoured substrate. I'll bet it was originally applied using a large vacuum table. Looking at the service manual for the stretch-type headliner on the earlier cars, it doesn't look like it would be very easy to retrofit.
