Could you potentially put the 5spd from a 190 into a 124 300D? That'd be a 
pretty fun car to drive.

Sun Valley is the only place I'd ever get a rebuilt/new MB auto trans 
from.  Any place else is a crapshoot and probably a waste of money.  For 
a bottom feeder car, i'd try a junkyard used auto trans or convert to 4 
speed.
