Sun Valley is the only place I'd ever get a rebuilt/new MB auto trans
from. Any place else is a crapshoot and probably a waste of money. For
a bottom feeder car, i'd try a junkyard used auto trans or convert to 4
speed.

I am convinced that should I ever need a transmission I will get one
from Sun Valley. I have heard so many positive things about these guys
over the years that I can't imagine anyone doing a better job.
A W124 rebuilt transmission from them is $1750. Transmission R&R is
pretty straightforward and something I would do if I had to.
If the car was worth saving it would make sense to go that route in my
opinion.
