I neglected to mention that I tried to check chain stretch, but I'm
not sure I did it right. I got a figure greater than 20 degrees.
The hand pump, when unscrewed, leaks a lot.

Stretch exceeding about 18 degrees ALMOST always results from from the chain being off by one link (1 link = 18 degrees). A chain that exceeds about 10 degrees of stretch is right on the verge of snapping. An error of between 10-12 degrees CAN result in the pistons and valves starting to hit each other (I don't recall in which direction but I believe >10 degrees of stretch). Mercedes cautions that if stretch reaches 10 degrees, the interior of the combustion chamber, pistons, valves be inspected for signs of collision.
