Jim, it appears to be a tab that is mounted to the console. It appears to be copper. I'll have to go downstairs and look more closely at the side of the ash tray and see if there's a metal track on it for the tab to slide along. I believe it does make contact when the ashtray is pulled open past a certain point.
So overall, it just seems that there ought to be some sort of "cradle" for the lighter to plug into. Instead, there is just sort of a division in the plastic space there where it apparently used to be. And there are a few small square or rectangular holes there - to accept plastic snap-type hooks?? I'm guessing now. Yes, mine is the woodgrain type. Sheesh, if it wasn't for my woodgrain, I'd have nothing but the star in the hood to allow me to claim that I have a luxury car. I'm going down to the car now anyway so I'll take a closer look at the things so I can speak more intelligently on it. Brian On 5/19/06, Jim Cathey <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

It plugs in to the car's wiring harness. I thought I remembered that you'd said it was also missing, but it sounds like that's not right. > Or am I correct in assuming that if I get the unit that pulls out by > depressing the metal tab, I have gotten all that I need, and I can > simply > place it in, and the lighter should be operational provided none of the > electric circuit has been altered? Sounds right. Use a meter to see if the metal track (or is it a tab that hits a track on the ashtray?) is 'hot' with the key on. You need to be sure you get the right ashtray, is your interior wood-faced or plastic? -- Jim _______________________________________ http://www.striplin.net For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://striplin.net/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_striplin.net
