this point is plastic. There must be a metal piece that comes up over or under the plastic side of the ashtray to meet that tab - and it must comewith the lighter "base".
Sounds like somebody butchered your ashtray. It's not supposed to come apart, though it does (to a point) in order that you can change the light bulb. Easy enough to get another used one. -- Jim
