Probably because there's no tach signal.  Usually these things need to
see something that resembles a gasoline engine tach signal, so they can
tell when the engine is running.  Also, they're designed to turn off the
engine if someone tries to put the car in gear without the key, or if
you leave it running too long; there's no electrical way to shut off a
Mercedes diesel.
