Although, I think even the later factory setups looked like a bit of an
afterthought by MB. The AC used the heat ducting etc but it wasn't all
that integrated with the controls and the wiring under the hood looked
like a bit of an add on. Not complaining, just pointing out that the
next generation (W123) looks like less of an add on (although, you might
correct me on that as I have no experience with the W123. My one and
only MB has been the W115 300D).

The MB service manuals covered the factory AC, but the unit in the 220D did
not look at all like the factory units.

Our 1972 220D/8 (a W115) came with factory-installed AC.
