Well, first in the four speeds on the column is good to get you rolling, but not much more. When starting out from a stop sign and making a turn, the first shift point on a diesel was as soon as you are in the intersection and turning. It took some coordination to make that shift in a turn. I think the gearing in the autos are pretty much the same as the analogous manual trans if you were really speedy, you could make one shift going into the turn and the next while exiting the intersection. I am talking normal 2 lane city streets here.

Good Lord! If you are correct the low gear must be for pulling out stumps. I have never pulled it down into low gear manually to my knowledge. I have never felt like it needed a gear below that in which it normally starts from a stop in Drive. I have sometimes thought it could use a higher gear on the highway when it is buzzing along at 70 plus MPH. I sort of wish it would slide into a higher gear on flat ground and reduce the revs a bit.

Will have to try it out on the way home tonight and see if it does appear to have a lower gear. I guess if I manually shift into the lowest range and then shift up I should ultimately be able to count 3 shifts and 4 gears. Interesting, as I am sure someone on this list earlier assured me it was only a 3 speed tranny. Memory is going
perhaps???

even the 110 automatics were/are 4 speeds. MB never put a 2 speed or 3
speed auto in a car.

How many gears in a 300D?
2 in each of 4 doors = 8
4 to pump the oil = 4
2 in the steering gear = 2
2 in each front seat = 4
2 for each forward speed in the trans = 8
3 for reverse in the trans = 3
4 in the differential = 4

A cursory tally indicates there are at least 33 gears in an 83 300D, not
considering the clock.
