I tried it last night on the way home from the office. Pulled it into L and it 
did appear to be a bit lower than
normal. Not sure why MB bothered though. Unless I put a hitch on it and use it 
to pull boats out at the launch
ramp, I'm not likely to ever need it.

Nope - both of my 115 (1976) 300D's had four speed auto trannys., and
my Dad's 115 (1972) 220D had a four speed auto tranny. All of them
started in 2nd.
