So the plot thickens.  The battery is new [within the year], not that that 
means a whole lot, but it would turn the crank easily. GP's are all new, but 
three have gone out in a few months and have been replaced.  Relay is @$160, 
relay kit [including  4 bosch gp's] is $5 more.  I'd have ordered from Rusty, 
but I'm working through a local shop.  I'll try the relay first - looks like it 
might be within my limited skill set.

That's the relay's way of telling you that the glow plugs don't all draw
the same current. Last time it happened to me ('79 300SD) the plugs were
good but the battery was weak. Put in a new group 49 and the light stayed
on for the usual waiting period.
