It could become very hairy then. Interfacing arbitrary
shader-based/fixed pipeline bits could prove to be a difficult
challenge, especially since there is no "standard" format for data
between the decoding stages (memory layout, bits...). You could put
that burden onto the driver but that complicates things quite a bit.

Again, as I see it, it's increasingly difficult to follow the video
codec trend and fixed pipe didn't cut it before. For example on most
cards we have had H262 fixed pipe for years, and H263 (divx) movies
were never accelerated by those fixed pipe cards until H264 came out a
lot later. H263 was probably the most widespread format of video these
days though, and we completely missed it.
