Thats true about linux but I had bad experiences with 
matsushita/panasonic drives.
This was a couple of years ago and if I remember correctly, the drive I 
had kept the region and how many times it could change in the hardware 
itself. There was nothing I could do to change the region and there was 
no firmware to make the drive RPC-1.

I have a lots of bad experiences with matsushita/panasonic drives not 
just dvd drives.
