Since I know you run Ubuntu my first thought would be to run:
   $ apt-cache search ipod

which should come up with a list of packages directly relating to the iPod.
I don't own an iPod and I'm not aggregating or automating downloads of 
podcasts, but running the command above (on Debian Sid) I note that 
the 'gpodder' and 'hpodder' packages specfically list being a "podcast 
catcher" (podcast downloader) in their description, along with syncing to the 
ipod.
