Hi, I set up a computer for my son with Kubuntu 8.04. He is in NJ and has an internet with Comcast. I told him to do the initial setup with comcast using a windows computer (which he did) because they'll tell him they dont support linux (which they did). In my experience with opimum and verizon i did this initail setup and then was good to go.
He can now connect to the internet with the windows laptop but when connecting to linux and opening firefox the ubuntu homepage opens, but links on that page or any url's do not work. It says server not found. I set the computer up in my home and did all the installation and updates with no problem so I know it was good. I assume it is using DHCP to find an existing connection. I've googled it and found others having the same problems but not many answers. One person suggested using a router and clone the MAC adderss to fool the comcast modem. I gave him a netgear router but dont think he knows how to set that up and i cant get down to NJ anytime soon. Do you think this will help, just setting up a router? Or is there anything else I can have him check over the phone? I have the same setup here so I can walk him through things. He doesnt know linux (yet) but is fairly computer literate. I had him open a terminal and do ifconfig and there was an IP address but when trying to ping something like abc.com it didnt work. and trying to get to 192.168.1.1 through the browser did not work either. i thought that would get us to the modem. Any suggestions thanks john _______________________________________________ Mid-Hudson Valley Linux Users Group http://mhvlug.org http://mhvlug.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mhvlug Upcoming Meetings (6pm - 8pm) MHVLS Auditorium Jun 4 - Sqeak! and eToys Jul 2 - KVM (Tenative) Aug 6 - Zenos Sep 3 - TBD
