Gimp is great but I can't use it to manipulate huge image files and its
not 100% compatible with PSD files (see the Slow gimp thread).
Photoshop under wine has worked well with huge files for me but its been
6 months since I tried using gimp for this purpose.
Gwenview was my favorite image viewer and I often missed it when I was
using windows. There are a number of other image viewers like xnview
(cross platform) and F-spot (default with ubuntu), Picasa is also
available for linux.
check out Krita, it seems like a great alternative to Gimp and
Photoshop. <http://krita.org/>
Krita and Gwenview are KDE applications and they may be available for
windows & mac now. Cross platform software is very convenient when you
are working with others or still needs to use windows or mac.
Inkscape is great for vector graphics :o) which also runs on windows & mac
Which apps where you looking to run under wine?
As for distribution, I suggest Ubuntu. here is a couple of reasons
* Huge user base with lots of free documentation and support
* Pleasant & easy package management
* Gnome, which is the default desktop management on ubuntu has a lot of
keyboard shortcuts similar to windows so you won't have to get used to
many new ones.
If you are recycling and setting up old computers, you might want to try
ubuntu with LXDE which is supposed to be lighter then gnome, KDE and
XFCE desktop environments.

Would like to migrate from Windows to Linux for my Graphics Apps.
While some like GIMP are available for both, there are others like
FastStone Image Viewer that are Windows only so would have to run under
Wine.
The App Database may not be up to date for Graphics but many of the
Windows only apps I use are listed working which is good.
Am interested in any suggestions concerning distros or any recent
experence concerning this.
Thanks
